 MALARIA
What is malaria and how does it react within our body?
Malaria is a disease that effects those living in the 3rd world. Studies have proven that between 300 to 515 million people are diagnosed with malaria each year. Malaria is transmitted from mosquito to humans when the female mosquito that is infected with the disease bites a human. The salivary glands in the mosquito keeps the wound bleeding so she may continue to feed, transmitting the disease into our body. Once inside the blood stream the malaria parasite enters a red blood cell and begins to kill the cell from the inside and it also multiplies within the cell. After the red blood cell has died it bursts, leaving the malaria parasites able to infect other cells and this continues until the host ( the human being) has died.

Who is mostly affected by the disease?
Malaria is contracted in 3rd world countries such as Africa and Cambodia. Malaria has been eradicated in most 1st world countries such as the USA and Australia. The disease effects these 3rd world countries because of poverty and the fact that their governments cannot afford to pay for the medicine that we have available in the 1st world. In 1990 over 80% of the population in the Sub-Saharan Africa were diagnosed with malaria.
Malaria kills 2,800 children a day in Africa but since this disease is a 3rd world disease, it isn't prioritised over obesity or cancer which are more prevalent  in the 1st world.

DIARRHOEA
What is diarrhoea, and how can something that is curable kill thousands in a 3rd world country?
There are two main types of diarrhoea; acute and prolonged. Acute diarrhoea is the one that effects those in 1st world countries and it lasts between 1-2 days or even a few hours. However, prolonged diarrhoea is much more severe. Prolonged diarrhoea can be a symptom of a disease that has been contracted. The reason that it is a killer in 3rd world countries is because of poverty. In 1st world countries we have a proper sanitation system and clean drinking water, but in 3rd world countries the sewerage leaks into the water sources and pollutes and poisons the water making it undrinkable.

Who does diarrhoea effect?
Diarrhoea effects everyone in the world at sometime in their life, but prolonged diarrhoea effects those living in 3rd world countries. In the Sub-Saharan Africa, 1.5 million children die every year and over 4 million people are affected by the disease world wide every year. Prolonged diarrhoea effects the 3rd world because of sanitation issues and the fact that these people cannot pay for medication to treat this illness.

CANCER
What is cancer?
In the world there are over 100 different types of cancer. The most common cases of cancer are breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer.  Cancer is the growth of the abnormal cells within the body that attack the normal cells. The abnormal cells cause tumours within the body, that in some cases are lethal. In 2007 cancer killed 7.9 million people world wide.

Who does cancer effect and is there a vacine for it?
Cancer effects those living in the 1st world and not the 3rd world. This is because in the 3rd world people do not live to the age that cancer is contracted. Cancer mostly effects those aged between 30-50 but can also effect those younger. For certain cancers there are things like vaccines and treatment but for others they are uncuralbe/unhelpable.

TUBERCULOSIS
What is tuberculosis and how does it effect the body?
Tuberculosis is the most common disease worldwide. Tuberculosis is a sever respiratory infection. If not treated correctly, tuberculosis will kill you. Less than 2 billion people worldwide are diagnosed with the disease every year. Of these people over 2 million people will die from the disease. It is contagious, which means it can be transferred from one person to the other.

Who is threatened by the disease? why?
Tuberculosis is a threat to those living the 3rd world. The reason for this is because they cannot afford the medication and vaccines for tuberculosis like we can. Tuberculosis kills so many people in the 3rd world  because of their weak immune system. Their immune system is weakened by other illnesses such as malaria and AIDS/HIV.
